Slumdog fever is about to get another healthy dose of OMG-Rahmun-is-so-awesome-India-Bollywood-yay-ness. AR Rahman has become the first Indian, born in India and based in India, to make it to the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The Pussycat Dolls version of his song ‘Jai Ho’ has leaped from number 100 to number 15 (we expected a top 10 spot this week) on the charts, courtesy some major singles sales. The original version of the song is doing as well, if not better than the PCD version, though sales of both are being combined by Billboard.
No, Panjabi MC with Jay-Z doesn’t qualify as an Indian spot on the charts as Rajinder Singh Rai (out with a new record) is based in the UK. Also Carl Douglas’ ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ made it to #1. It was produced by Biddu Appaiah, who didn’t get a lead credit.
