Recession Hits Mumbai Music Venues

Money’s tight, and it’s forcing some of Mumbai’s live music venues to change. Not Just Jazz By The Bay has upped its gate charge from Rs 200 to Rs 250 per person. While a Rs 50 jump may not seem too much, when considered in the context of a cramped music venue and a classic rock covers band, the price does seem steep (hey, journos make no money).

Over at the Blue Frog, we’re offered a free drink for every one we pay for between 7pm and 9pm. Apart from happy hours, 2008′s best live music venue in Mumbai is also going back to 9:30pm gig start timings. Or so they claim. The last time they tried that, we showed up at 8:59pm to beat the Rs 300 gate charge that kicked in at 9pm, only for Ashutosh Phatak to take the stage at 10:45pm. Still, it’s a start. Perhaps they don’t want to let us down in 2009.
