The Oscars and Grammies are round the corner and soon everyone’s going to get Awards-fatigue. Waking up at 6.30am to watch them live can wreak havoc on your workday to say the least. Luckily, you didn’t have to get up at the crack on dawn to know what in our humble opinion was the best independent music of 2008.
It’s all right here – from the year’s best gig and the year’s best moment at a gig (think falling frontmen, crowd sing-alongs) to the year’s best album and the worst co-option of an indie trend by a mainstream motherfucker. We’re a Mumbai based operation so the live awards are restricted to the many, many gigs we saw last year (mostly at the year’s best venue) but the rest of the awards were open wide.
Among the people we felt much love for in 2008 were Mumbai’s electro-soul duo Shaa’ir + Func and Bangalore alternative act Lounge Piranha (they scored four nominations each) as well Malayalam rockers Avial, metal monsters Scribe, folk troubadour Raghu Dixit and Delhi’s very Arctic Monkeys Indigo Children (formerly known as The Superfuzz) (they got three noms each).
Find out who won what and how many. Head to The Indiecision ’08 homepage!
