Mumbai has rarely had it as good as Friday night. If you timed your travel well, you could catch anywhere between five to eight top bands perform outdoor with great sound and just the right amount of metal.

After Rock On For Humanity, I headed to the Andheri Sports Complex to catch the remainder of Day 1 of the Great Indian Rock festival. Which meant I caught Swedish ‘pop-metal’ act Freak Kitchen tearing ASC apart.

Head downstairs for a short review, pics and the Indiecision.

I’d only heard of Freak Kitchen because they played GIR a couple of years ago, but the reviews of that gig were pretty good.

The three-piece from Sweden, with Mattias Eklundh on vocals/guitar, seemed to have a great time on stage, which rubbed off on the about-400 strong GIR crowd (in case you were wondering, about 4,000 people turned up for Rock On For Humanity). They’re music is very alternative-ish metal which is energetic, complex (on several occassions the chant ‘Mumbai Mumbai’ was played to a “5 by 16 beat”) and fun. Eklundh gets with the crowd, even though he is yet to understand the concept of MC/BC.

Overall, a great end to a packed Friday evening.
