The Onstage Foundation is a project that provides funding to artists looking to record/promote their music. It was launched earlier this year and has Ehsaan Noorani and Vishal Dadlani as trustees. The project has been quiet for a while but recently tied up with MySpace India to promote the artists that the Foundation funds.

In an article on Radioandmusic, Tarun Tripathi, Onstage foundation director and MySpace India marketing and content director, is quoted saying

MySpace is a social networking site formed for the purpose of promoting underground independent musical talents. We would help the onstage foundation decide whom to give out the funds and once the bands are signed, Myspace would promote the artists through our websites. Myspace would help the bands signed to get international exposure and the necessary publicity.

Of course this stuff is easier said than done. Somehow though, this initiative does seems to have a strong, er, foundation. The fact that people like Tarun Tripathi have a vested interest in the promotion means that though the PR value of the tie-up is good, the bands can be assured of at least a home page spot on MySpace’s Indiahub. The article also reports that the Foundation will provide Rs 50,000 for each band to record (though there may be some exceptions). The amount seems fair, and since its interest free, is great for budding artists.

If the Foundation can get four-five acts out with studio recorded music that’s promoted by MySpace via the website and/or gigs in the next six months, I’ll even be inclined to call the effort a success.
