Yoo like da reggae riddim? Yoo at da Blue Frog lasth night rasta?

If your answers were ‘Yes’ and ‘No’, then you missed a killer gig. If your answers were ‘No’ and ‘No’, then you missed a killer gig last night. If you didn’t understand the questions then you’re the spambot that’s been hounding the comments with fallic size aids.

Dub L.F.O. put together probably the best gig of the month with a 75 minute set last night at the Blue Frog. Head downstairs for the full review, pics and the Indiecision.

I’m no expert on the genre, but a lot of periodic fretboard upstroke passes off as reggae.

Matisyahu being the only reference to Blue Frog’s description of the gig, there frankly was no idea of what to expect from Dub LFO. Now while that may not be a great reflection on Matisyahu it did make for an open mind. And hey, when and Israeli band plays Jamaican music in India to an audience of equal part foreigners and Indians, you know globalisation is doing its job.

The gig started about 20 minutes late but that’s an improvement. The band appeared on stage with the lead singer dressed in an orange jumpsuit. Is it just me, or doesn’t he look a lot like Josh Homme? The band apparently started out as a rock outfit but stumbled their way into being a reggae act. The rock bit was amply visible with some killer riffs and drum work.

The vocalist was energetic and did much to keep the crowd pumped up. He also played guitar like a pro. Whether his reggae voice is his real voice is a point to ponder. The guitarist was reportedly unwell but he did pull of some mean guitar work.

The band’s set was heavily rock oriented with a lot of stop/start melodies that were wholly original (though one could sing ‘Buffalo Soldier’ to a lot of the progressions) and frenetic. The did a couple of instrumental tracks that were heavy and well thought out. The sound was great with the guitars being crunchy and clean at the right moments.

Props to the drummer.

One of the best gigs of this month. May gig roundup coming up.
