Multiple laptops on stage add an air of skepticism to the show. This is compounded by more than five instruments. Used by the same person. So essentially, Da-Saz was walking a thin line.

After the press Da-Saz got I was expecting a gig with much techno fiddling and less overall enthu.

The multi-ethnic, multi-instrument mish mash that is Da-Saz is actually pretty coherent for a, um, mish mash. Their sound is a blend of Sufiana, Hindustani and electronic. Dhruv Sangari’s voice resonated the acoustically treated walls of the club as the band kicked off with ‘Ja Mudja’.

The show was basically watching these guys play. The music was brilliant (picked up the CD on the exit) and well packaged. There were only about 30 people in the audience, and it was sad that a majority of them didn’t seem to care about what was happening on stage.

Suchet Malhotra is a multi-talented musician, his skill on full display playing anything that could provide a beat. The ‘drum’ sound came from what looked like a speaker box with a particularly hollow inside. It was played by hand.

The band played two sets of about 45 minutes each. The occasional instrumental extravagance could easily be forgiven. Dhruv is charming and his banter in between songs was pleasant, especially because it was in very good Hindi.

Don’t get intimidated into buying repeat beers at Blue Frog.

Listen to Da-Saz.
