Long time Mumbai rockers Vayu have had their fair share of ups and downs. I remember watching them at an I-Rock a couple of years ago when vocalist 2Blue came up on stage and referenced an article written in JAM magazine which stated that Vayu didn’t have any original compositions. Promptly and OC was played, and life was peachy.

Now, via the band’s mailing list, the Vayu frontman seems perturbed about an interview that appeared in the Mumbai Mirror which apparently, and under closer inspection, leaves out some of what 2Blue had related to the newspaper’s reporter via email. Read 2Blue’s letter after the break. One question is particularly noteworthy, though not mentioned in the letter.

MM: Is VAYU going on tour to promote the new album?

2Blue: Yes, why not? If Music/Artist Management firms are willing to join hands with self-respecting rock bands that do not want to lip sync on stage amidst dancers in skimpy clothes â?? sure!

On a related note, today is 2Blue’s 33rd birthday, so happy birthday 2Blue!

The email in full.

I have something to share with you today. Very recently, there’s been a VAYU interview in Mumbai Mirror. Here are excerpts of my email response to the journalist’s questions.

I have included a link to the online article so you can go, post your comments.

MM: VAYU has been termed as a “cover band” by most of your critics, what would you say to them?

2Blue: What would I say to our critics? I’d say, “Thank you for coming for our shows and screaming your asses off for some more Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple when we wanted to play some of our own music.” I’d also like to say that I’m aware that some of them think `Knocking On Heaven’s Door’ and `Live and Let Die’ were written by Guns N’ Roses, `Wild World’ by Mr. Big, `Hush’ by Deep Purple, `Doctor Doctor’ by Iron Maiden, and `Cats In The Cradle’ by Ugly Kid Joe. And I know how much they loved the Scorpions’ `Acoustica’ album for the covers of the Queen and Kansas songs it contained. The point is â?? no one complained when these successful international acts gave us covers. Our new CD `Wings Of A Dream’ contains only original material â?? but I’m beginning to worry about it because of the double-standards of the critics amongst us. So who are they targeting next? The young school / college bands that cover VAYU?

On a separate note, I’d like to thank all our critics for helping us get better and stronger.

MM: Any VAYU shows coming up?

2Blue: For me, a VAYU show is a VAYU show. I can’t tell major from minor. If we start judging shows by the number of people that show up, the star rating of the hotel they put us up in, or the money they pay; it’s a dangerous measure. What matters is how happy it makes you feel at the end of it all. Anyways to answer your question, there are several shows that are lined up. MM: Can fans get a sneak peek at the songs before release? When’s the release, why is it held up?

2Blue: When’s the release? Now that’s the question I’ve been dying to have an answer to. What’s holding it back? Well, as I had once stated â?? “People will always be far more willing to invest on a safer bet called Bollywood.” A lot of producers want us to add Hindi tracks to the setlist. We’re not losing sleep though. `Wings Of A Dream’ will be out soon! And you don’t need a crystal ball to tell you that!

The page has just been created. So it doesn’t yet have the look and feel that we’d want it to. But you can listen to the tracks loud and clear alright.
