Ankur Tewari is a singer/songwriter based in Mumbai. He fronts the Hindi rock band Ankur & The Ghalat Family along with fellow members Sidd Coutto, Johan Pais and Gaurav Gupta. He also has numerous solo projects to his name. Besides being heavily involved in the indie music circuit, he is an actor, composer, screen-writer and editor, working for a series of Bollywood projects.
Way before stamping his insignia in show business, Ankur Tewari spent his growing years in a small town in the north of India, Roorkee. Roorkee was the perfect cultural hub where between theatre and music at school, he found himself dwelling in various art forms at a very early age. He forced his father to buy him his first guitar and after his relationship with the guitar tutor lasted barely a week, took the liberty of teaching himself with the help of whatever sources he could get his hands on. College years in Bhopal saw Ankur write acoustic-based songs which today, provide him with his unique sound. He struggled to get his music heard for a while in Mumbai (then Bombay), but could not successfully catch a break. He then moved to Delhi and working under the likes of Col. Kapoor, Bobby Bedi and Shekhar Kapoor, learned the ropes in filmmaking. After producing a couple of stage plays, art directing a television series, sing half a dozen radio jingles, producing a short film and curating an international film festival, he moved back to Mumbai in 2004. While working on a film, he was spotted by an A&R from music label HOM records, who ended up producing his record. After spending over three years carefully putting down his music, he finally completed his debut album; Jannat. From there, he eventually met with Music Producer Sidd Coutto, who in turn introduced him to Pozy and Johan, and Ankur and the Ghalat Family was born.
